Isle Royale is the center of a wilderness archipelago and
the largest island in Lake Superior. The island is 18 miles
from Minnesota’s north shore. It stretches 45 miles long,
and 9 miles across at its widest part. The relationship
between wolves and moose on Isle Royale has been the
subject of the longest predator-prey research study, begun
in 1958. I often imagine that a moose at 10 years of age
is in his prime and knows the island well. This painting
depicts a bull on the move during the fall rut.
